Original Art – Enhancing the Home
Original art can bring any home decor to life. With so many unique styles to choose from, its individuality can set a living space apart from any other. However, original work often carries the misconception of being high-priced – we’ve all seen the TV programmes showcasing one-off pieces worth thousands at auction – except there are many flourishing young artists who are keen to share their talents with art lovers, meaning it could be more affordable than you think.
Take Ellen Webb from Lingfield. Ellen has been exhibiting and selling art at The Lingfield Art Exhibition for several years, in fact her first portrait sold for £20 when she was just 13.
She is passionate about art and is currently doing a one year Foundation Diploma at City and Guilds of London Art School and in September she’ll be heading to London College of Fashion to do a BA Hons Degree in Fashion Illustration.
For the annual Lingfield Art Exhibition, Ellen’s forte is painting collages of dogs and has been commissioned to paint several dogs for Christmas presents as a direct result of people she’d met through exhibiting.
“It is a good place to start exhibiting” Ellen said. “I have a great time at the exhibition, I get to engage with the public and talk about my paintings. Most of my commissions came from the details in the brochure.”
Organisers of the event are keen to encourage more young adults to showcase their work at the event. For those that may be considering it, Ellen’s advice is “to choose a topic you’re interested in as it is more meaningful. Be confident to set a good price and don’t spend all your profit on the frame.”
Ellen is still doing commissions and can be contacted before the event at email@example.com.
The exhibition which is being sponsored by Howard Cundey is open for public viewing 20-26th July. It’s a great opportunity to view local artists’ work and get a feel for what’s your style. Who knows – in years to come it could be you on TV auctioning your original piece!
If you have an artistic talent there’s still time to enter your work. Find out more. Exhibits must be entered by 18 June.
